This earthenware was so named because its large, rising protrusions look like a burning flame. This Jomon earthenware combines intensity and elegance, and is richly decorated. It has been found at more than 200 ruins in eastern Japan, with a concentration of excavations in Niigata Prefecture. Some were unearthed with scorched food attached to their inner surface. One can imagine that ancient people might have used them to cook nuts, meat and fish.
