This long narrative scroll, created in the Kamakura period, depicts the Heiji Rebellion of 1159, a major conflict at the end of the Heian period. This scene focuses on Emperor Nijō, who, after being held captive by Minamoto no Yoshitomo and others, escapes the palace disguised as a court lady and is received at Taira no Kiyomori’s residence in Rokuhara. While the lines are not overly decorative, the vivid colors are a distinctive feature.
