This 12th-century handscroll depicts "Uen Kaseki," a hell where those who commit sins such as killing, theft, and sexual misconduct are condemned. It also punishes those who get travelers drunk, rob them of their possessions, or even kill them. In this realm, burning stones rain down from above, and the sinners are scorched and collapse, unable to escape. Cries of torment echo endlessly from a river of molten metal mixed with hot blood.
