In 1864, the Tokugawa Shogunate dispatched a mission to France to negotiate the closing of the port of Yokohama, which had been forced to open by Western countries. The mission left on a French warship, stopping at Shanghai and India along the way, traveled from Suez to Cairo overland, and crossed the Mediterranean to a French port. This photograph was taken en route to Cairo, showing the Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza in the background.
