This embroidered Buddhist image from the 8th century is the largest surviving example of its kind in Japan. Created for memorial and devotional purposes, it depicts the Buddha giving a sermon, surrounded symmetrically by bodhisattvas, monks, devotees, and celestial beings. The use of colorful threads and fine stitching to express texture is especially notable.
