A Line to the Sky

This work uses bold brushstrokes to express the severity of a winter mountain landscape. The strong central vertical line, common in landscape painting, highlights the cliff’s outline and draws the viewer’s eye. Sesshū's works include six designated National Treasures—the most of any Japanese painter—as well as 19 Important Cultural Properties.

A Zen monk-painter of the Muromachi period. He established a distinctive style that had a significant influence on later Japanese painting.
