The Monk Behind the Legend

Genjō Sanzō was a 7th-century Chinese monk of the Tang dynasty. He traveled to India and brought back a large collection of Buddhist scriptures, dedicating his life to their translation. "Sanzō" is a general term for Buddhist scriptures and also a title given to monks well versed in them. He served as the model for the character Sanzō Hōshi in "Journey to the West."
