Restoration Hero, Fallen Rebel

A samurai of the Satsuma Domain and a soldier-statesman active from the late Edo to Meiji periods, Saigō Takamori was one of the "Three Great Nobles of the Restoration." He served as a Councilor and the first General of the Army, but resigned due to internal conflict. Returning to Kagoshima, he worked to educate local youth before leading the Satsuma Rebellion, Japan’s last civil war, where he was defeated and took his own life.
