Architect of Modern Japan

A samurai of the Satsuma Domain and a key figure in the Meiji Restoration, Ōkubo Toshimichi was one of the "Three Great Nobles of the Restoration," along with Saigō Takamori. He served as Councilor and Finance Minister in the new government, promoting centralization. As deputy envoy of the Iwakura Mission, he studied Western systems and contributed to Japan's modernization. He was assassinated in 1878 by discontented samurai in Tokyo.
