The Demon Vice-Commander

Hijikata Toshizō was a samurai of the late Edo period who served as Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, a security force in Kyoto. Born into a farming family in Tama, he studied Tennen Rishin-ryū swordsmanship and joined the Rōshigumi to guard Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi. Together with Kondō Isami, he helped form the Shinsengumi. Though he later became a retainer of the shogunate, he died in the final battle of the Boshin War at Goryōkaku.
