Enlightenment Through a Sound

This painting depicts a story of Zen monks from the Tang dynasty. It is inspired by the tale of Kyōgen, a monk and gravekeeper who achieved enlightenment upon hearing the sound of a pebble striking bamboo. The composition skillfully conveys a serene mountain setting, seemingly resonating with the echo of that sound.

Kanō Motonobu (1476-1559)

A painter of the late Muromachi period and the second-generation head of the Kanō school.
