Leading the Mission to Europe

Ikeda Nagaoki was a samurai of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, known for his exceptional talent. Appointed to key posts such as Magistrate of Foreign Affairs at a young age, he led a shogunate delegation to Europe at 27, met Napoleon III, and signed the Paris Agreement with France. However, the shogunate refused to ratify the treaty, resulting in his political downfall. Though briefly reinstated, he resigned due to illness and died at the age of 43.
