The Dog General

This 13th-century Buddhist statue depicts the "Dog General," one of the Twelve Divine Generals who serve as protectors of "Yakushi Nyorai." In accordance with Yakushi Nyorai's Twelve Vows, each general guards one of the twelve directions, and in China and Japan, they were associated with the twelve animals of the zodiac. The figure features spiked hair with a dog's face visible beneath it. Dressed in Tang-style armor, it holds an axe in its right hand and raises its left hand above its eyes, as if scanning for enemies.
